FAQs – ECU Programming & Motorcycle Tuning at PKB Performance

1. What is ECU programming?

The ECU (Engine Control Unit) controls all of the engine's key parameters—from fuel injection and ignition to torque limiters. With ECU programming or an ECU flash, we customize these maps to your motorcycle. The goal: more power, better rideability, and optimal throttle response—motorsport-tested and field-proven.

2. How long does ECU programming take?

A standard ECU tuning usually takes 1-2 hours.
A custom dyno setup takes longer, as the motorcycle is measured and adjusted multiple times. An appointment is absolutely necessary.

3. Where is the ECU programming performed?

All ECU programming and map optimization are done directly in-house.
We use our own dynamometer for professional tuning. Alternatively, you can send us your control unit by mail—we'll program it and return it as quickly as possible.

4. Will ECU tuning void my warranty?

Manufacturer warranties may be limited or voided by ECU tuning. We recommend checking with your dealer or manufacturer beforehand. Many customers opt for tuning after the warranty period has expired.

5. Is ECU tuning legal and compliant with German road traffic regulations?

ECU optimization is generally not approved for road use, as it alters the original homologation. Our ECU programming is therefore considered a racing/export item. It is fully usable for racetrack use.

6. What is a quickshifter (QS)?

A quickshifter allows you to shift gears without using the clutch or the throttle. The result: lightning-fast gear changes, more stable handling, and more driving pleasure – whether on the road or the racetrack.

7. What is overrun cut-off (overrun slam)?

Overrun cutoff interrupts fuel injection during overrun. This produces crisp, popping exhaust noises and can be combined with quickshifter systems to achieve even shorter shift times.

8. What does regular ECU tuning include?

  • Adaptation of the injection maps
  • Optimization of the ignition maps
  • Adaptation to exhaust system & fuel quality
  • Removal of torque and speed limiters (model dependent)
  • Activation of additional features such as quickshifter, launch control, overrun cut-off

The result: noticeably more driving pleasure, smoother engine running, and a significant increase in power and torque.

9. Can I have my motorcycle restored to its original condition?

Yes – we back up your original ECU software and can restore the factory version at any time.

10. How much does ECU programming cost?

Prices vary depending on the model, control unit, and desired scope. Standard programming starts at €150, while custom test bench tuning is priced separately.

11. Do you also offer suspension conversions?

Yes – in addition to ECU programming, we are also your partner for chassis optimization and chassis modifications.
We are an official service center for Öhlins & TracTive and an authorized dealer for YSS Suspension. Whether it's service, conversion, custom tuning, or complete suspension tuning – we get the most out of your motorcycle.
Our chassis work is carried out in-house and can be combined directly with ECU tuning or test bench work.

12. Why can you do all this?

Because we're not just a workshop, but a team of specialists with diverse backgrounds. We combine experience in motorsport, workshop practice, software and electronics development, as well as chassis and engine technology. We apply this knowledge in a consolidated manner.

13. How many people are behind PKB?

All together we are 7 employees!

14. Do you also know anything about engine tuning?

Of course! We tune and develop engine components! From cylinder heads to camshafts and compression adjustments, we're your contact.
